Having grown up in a small town, I relate to just about every Buzzfeed article I read with any mention of “you know you grew up in a small town when…” or a tweet followed by #smalltownproblems.
My small town taught me the importance of community and that home really is where the heart is, but it also taught me to dream big. As a young kid growing up, I often felt stuck in my hometown. I dreamed of one day moving away and living in a big city – a stark contrast from my small town.
I wanted to have experiences that went far beyond bike rides around the lake. I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and live in new places that I had not called my home for the past 18 years of my life. The small town that I grew up in taught me to dream big and instilled a passion for travel within me.
My passion for travel has taken me on solo adventures to big cities and has fostered a greater confidence in myself that I do not think I would have had I not been raised in a small town. I would never of dreamed of studying abroad in Italy this summer if it were not for my passion to travel the globe.
Although I do not have plans to return to settle down in my hometown after graduation, it will always hold a special place in my heart. My hometown inspired me to step out of my comfort zone when it comes to travel and realize that there are so many more experiences to be had outside of my small town.
